Finding Time for Fitness

by Yasmin Nolasco

What if fitness was fun? Instead of making exercise a tedious task have you considered focusing on a joyous movement? I often hear people say they don’t have time or desire for physical activity. Well in this case we brainstorm the benefits of physical activity. Then we think of an activity that you would enjoy if you had the desire to move.

What are the benefits of physical movement?

  • Enhance Mood
  • Increase Energy
  • Improves Balance and Flexibility
  • Enhance Sleep
  • Lower Stress
  • Build Stronger Muscles
  • Lower Blood Pressure and Cholesterol
  • Lower Risk of Heart attack and Stroke
  • Lower Blood Glucose
  • Manage Weight
  • Strengthen bones

It can be challenging to get active and start a new routine of movement. The trick is to find an activity that you enjoy. Look at it as playtime or fun! What did you enjoy as a child? If time is a constraint, think of ways to include it during your work day. Walk or take stairs when possible. Perhaps that means breaking up your fitness routine in 15 or 10-minute increments. Perhaps your best option is to follow a fitness video at home. See below for suggestions.

What if you have an injury or joint pains? The challenges to moving are real and so are the solutions. Think about the number of people with a handicap or limitations that still manage to find an activity to move their body. There is a solution to most challenges and if joint pain is yours you can try yoga, swimming, biking, low-impact movements, or lifting light weights. What are you willing to do for your health if you know that our bodies are meant to move? Try a low-impact video at home.
