H2O- The Secret to Better Health

by Yasmin Nolasco

Water is everywhere on earth. In fact wherever there is water you can be sure to find life. What would happen to a fish without water? Similarly, there is no life to humanity. Water is an essential need as is food for our existence. Along the way, in modern times, the variety of beverages with flavors has increased. Unnatural beverages are a large culprit for various diseases. Beverage companies encourage people’s desire for sugar and have become an accomplice to the large numbers of sugar addictions, diabetes, and various illness. Many people have forgotten about our essential beverage being water. Why is water beneficial? First of all our body is made up of 60% water. Therefore we need water for the majority of our bodily functions, including:

  • flushing out waste from your body
  • regulating body temperature
  • helping your brain function

There are numerous benefits to drinking water:

  1. Water consumption helps lubricate and cushion your joints, spinal cord, and tissues. Water helps lubricate our insides and lessen excess mucous production. This will help you enjoy physical activity and lessen the discomfort caused by conditions like arthritis.
  2. Help bowel movement while preventing constipation.
  3. Helps digestion. Drinking water before, during, and after a meal will help your body break down the food you eat more easily. This will help you digest food more effectively and get the most out of your meals.
  4. Lose weight. Drinking more water while dieting and exercising may just help you lose extra pounds while flushing out toxins and fat. Water also helps feel satiated. Try drinking water before eating a meal. A 2013 study in 50 young women with overweight demonstrated that drinking an additional 16.9 ounces (500 mL) of water 3 times per day before meals for 8 weeks led to significant reductions in body weight and body fat compared with their pre-study measurements
  5. Helps blood circulation. Water carries helpful nutrients and oxygen to your entire body. Reaching your daily water intake will improve your circulation and have a positive impact on your overall health.
  6. Avoid dehydration that could lead to seizures and death.
  7. Help prevent various illnesses such as Kidney stones, exercise-induced asthma, urinary tract infection, hypertension, digestive complications. etc.

So how much water are we supposed to drink? As a general rule, you want to drink half of your weight in ounces. As an example, if you weigh 130lbs, then you would drink 65oz of filtered water. Need a reminder? Try downloading a water reminder app. Try Hydro Coach App.  Purchase a bottle to refill with water. This will serve as a reminder and keep you on top of staying hydrated. If you are not a big fan of the taste of water you can add a freshly squeezed lemon, cucumber, or mint. Whatever you do is great as long as you avoid sugary beverages and stay hydrated with pure H2O.
