“No time for Exercise”

by Yasmin Nolasco

We have all heard or are familiar with the keys to a balanced healthy life: eat fresh foods(unprocessed), drink adequate water, quality sleep, spend time out in nature, do physical activity, and practice some sort of meditation or spiritual practice. When we forget to incorporate one of these our bodies begin to break down causing disease or pain. Disease doesn’t just happen to us and we are in full control of our health. Let’s focus on physical activity today because it’s the most ignored or skipped in people’s lives. Movement is as important as eating and drinking water. In order to maintain health, we must move our bodies for at least 30 minutes a day and yes you can do this in increments.

So does exercise really make a difference in the grand scheme of things? According to research at Harvard and the National Institute of Health, individuals who live a sedentary lifestyle without regular exercise decrease life expectancy by 7-9 years. The study included moderate activities, such as brisk walking for 150 minutes a week. Another benefit to an active lifestyle is improving the quality of life while decreasing hospital visits. Exercise can prevent us from developing various diseases such as diabetes.  Want to improve your health and quality of living? Find a physical activity that you enjoy and start moving. This can be walking, dancing, taking stairs, cardio class from home, swimming, biking, or simple chores around the house.

How did you feel the last time you exercised? Reasons why you need physical activity in your life.

  1. Exercise helps our hormones stay balanced while reducing stress.
  2. A gym session or brisk walk can help our mood. Physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals that may leave you feeling happier, more relaxed, and less anxious. It also provides our brain with oxygen.
  3. Helps maintain heart health. Exercise delivers oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and helps your cardiovascular system work more efficiently. When your heart and lung health improve you have more energy to tackle daily chores.
  4. Promotes better sleep. Regular physical activity can help you fall asleep faster, get better sleep, and deepen your sleep. Just don’t exercise too close to bedtime or you may be too energized to go to sleep.
  5. Helps to maintain a healthy weight and most importantly burn fat. Excess fat in the body is the main culprit for disease.

Find an activity that works for you because after all movement is life!
