Why Is Change So Difficult?

by Yasmin Nolasco

How many times have you given yourself a goal to change a habit or perhaps to lose weight? We start off well by letting go of old unhealthy habits and replacing them with new healthier ones. A few weeks after we may find ourselves being challenged to stick with changes and stay consistent and so we fall back into old routines or habits. The question remains of why is change so difficult.

There are many reasons why people resist change and psychology has studied this. One reason people have a challenge changing is that they don’t see the benefit of changing. Often times people resist change because they believe they will lose something of value or fear they will not be able to adapt to the new ways. While others give themselves too many changes all at once and have a difficult time sticking to one. Sometimes you are just so comfortable with your current habits that it’s too difficult to convince yourself.

This is when it’s important to remember your “WHY.”

How does one plan for success by changing old unhealthy habits? Find your why! Why is changing important to you today and what will happen if you don’t change anything? Write your vision for your healthier self and what it feels like. Write your goal with a plan of action specifically with baby steps to help you reach your main goal.

Start with one plan of action for two weeks and slowly add more if necessary.
